Overview
Being one of the largest churches of the Limassol mountainous area, the Church of Panagia Eleousa fascinates every visitor, since its stone lining and its size create a unique image. The church , with a length of 30 meters and a width of 15, can accommodate up to 1500 people. It was built in 1909 on the remains of the Church of Megalo Agros, which was active until 1890. The altar in the church is the same as the original one. According to religious sources, the iconography of the Icon of the Virgin Mary of Eleousa is the creation of Apostle Luke and was brought to Cyprus and Agros through 40 monks who left Asia Minor and settled in the area of Agros. The icon attracts thousands of believers every year, since it is considered miraculous. The church celebrates on 21 November (the Presentation of the Virgin Mary), when a great feast is held and many believers come to worship.
